The Best San Diego Comic Con '04 Report Ever (not really)!

Date: August 3, 2004
Writer: Butch

Unlike K, I have but a pittance of con photos to share with you. But what I lack in the photo documentary department, I make up for in....in....uh, I'll get back to you on that. In the meantime, I'll try to make the stories brief. Vote for me!

I arrived in San Diego and checked into a hotel on Wednesday, an extra day dubbed "Preview Night" for SDCC attendees who had registered beforehand. Only problem was, I needed to get my convention badge, which allows admission into events, the Exhibit Hall, and other stuffs. The waiting line for this was unprecedently huge. This year was my third time attending, and I don't think I remember the line being so absurdly long. After several hours of standing, walking (but mostly standing), and generally bitching with others about ways the SDCC pre-reg system should be improved, we were in. However, by then Preview Night was over, so I returned to the hotel room after getting some dinner. Con would have to start on tomorrow for me.

Thursday, the Con had more "informative" panel sessions than anything. Alot sounded very interesting, but it was just my luck to pick the ones that either:
A. regurgitated tons of info I'd known anyway, or
B. regurgitated tons of info I'd known anyway.

About the only panel (that I attended) that was interesting was one on character design. And of course, as always, the Previews panel for Summer movies was great. Besides the panels, there were alot of neat things to be had and seen around the Exhibit Hall and such. Also, that evening I finally got to watch 'Finding Nemo', which I never saw in theatres before, because I'm a poor, busy student who can't stand watching movies by myself. Snf sob.

Did some wandering around the Exhibit Hall, and even did a drive-by shooting at the City of Heroes booth. They just happened to be asking TT-related trivia questions for prizes, and since no one else seemed to know basic Titans stuff, I walked off with a shirt. Anyway, the con was still young, and the best was yet to come. For on Friday was the *bum bum bum.....* Warner Bros. Animation panel! With Teen Titans! And other stuff! Shock and awe, dude!

I didn't even visit the Convention Center until it was time for the Cartoon Network panel (scheduled right before the WB Animation panel), and spent the time beforehand hanging around the hotel and several places San Diego had to offer. When I arrived on time at the CN panel, it was already well packed. The spotlight was on Megas XLR (cool show) and two upcoming series: "Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends" by PpG guy Craig McCracken, and "The Life and Times of Juniper Lee" by comic guy Judd Winick. Judd pretty much sold the crowd on it, despite not having any finished animation to show. Juniper Lee looks interesting, and I'd been hearing about it for what seems like years now, so I'll be sure to tune in when it finally premieres. Same with Foster's, but admittedly with less anticipation. I'm an action/comedy kinda fan, after all. Anyhow, soon after that was the Titans/JLU/Batman panel.

I'll save you all from an excruciatingly detailed rundown (leaving that to the others :P), and just summarize. The panel featured several of the TT staff, including Glenn and David, and voice actors Tara Strong (Raven), Scott Menville (Robin), Ron Perlman (Slade), and Greg Cipes (Beastboy).

The panel audience was shown a music video for the Puffy Amiyumi TT themesong (extended version), which contained notable character appearances such as Blackfire and (assumedly) Brother Blood. Talks started off with Ron musing a bit about past experiences as an actor, and the others picked up with details about the show and what to expect from the upcoming seasons. Namely (though already confirmed), that Cyborg and Raven will be focused on in Seasons 3 and 4 respectively, and that the main villain of Season 3 will be charismatic cult leader Brother Blood. The staff also mentioned how pleased they were on how they brought Slade back into the series, so that's definitely something to anticipate.

Soon we were treated to another clip, this time of a fight scene between the Titans and the returned Red X, from upcoming Season 3 episode "X". This Red X (who is most definitely not Robin) appears to have taken Robin's Red X suit, and uses it and the trademark X weapons (heh...Weapon X) to great advantage. After single-handedly besting the Titans in battle (cept Robin of course), Red X escapes after being pursued by Robin across a rooftop. But not before appearing to have a malfunction with his suit. Following this, the other Titans are in a state of shock, and start to accuse Robin of what had taken place. After being poked around by Starfire and almost Cyborg, Robin insists that he has nothing to do with this mysterious villain.

After a bit of closing discussion with the staff, including Tara and Scott doing impromtu voices for us, the session winded down with a call out to the audience for questions to be asked. Oddly, no one stepped up to the plate, and so the Titans portion of the panel ended.

Following up was the Justice League Unlimited session, which mostly included clips of what to expect, and discussion about legal issues concerning the use of many superheros for the series. The Batman panel was up next, which featured a screening of an entire episode from the upcoming series. The episode covered the origin of the Man-Bat, as well as a first look at what the younger Bruce Wayne is like. The whole look of the show is exceptionally awesome, but the story wasn't quite as spectacular for a premiere.

Friday ended with more Exhibit Hall browsing (if by browsing, you mean "trying to not get crushed by hordes of zombie people"), and a taking in of movie screenings for "Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Kill Bill". After that, sleeeep.

Saturday brought signings, sketches, and pleasant walks in the middle of the night. At the Exhibit Hall, I swung by several booths I meant to check out, including various galleries and stores, DC Comics, Mondo Media (aka. those crazy HappyTree Friends people), Palisades Toys (with an awesome display for their Invader Zim sculpts), and the sometimes dubious but always awesome Bob the Angry Flower. Visited Todd Nauck's booth (main Teen Titans GO! artist, and did art for the Young Justice series) to get a sketch and a comic signed, while trying to make conversation despite coming down with starstricken grief.

Was also sure to check out the Teen Titans merchandise displays at the Bandai and Monogram booths (more on these in a bit). I took several photos, but stupidly forgot to keep the flash off....then ended up losing the camera anyway, but that's another story. Instead, here are some photos of upcoming Bandai TT toys, courtesy of Derrick Wyatt. Give him much love if you ever meet him.

Done with picking up some books and free stuffs, and trying to convince my accompanying aunt to not spend a fortune on capsule toys, I stopped by the Komikwerks booth to say hi to Derrick Wyatt and Ben Jones (artists for the Teen Titans series, and part-time philanderers) and visited a few artists local to my area back home. After the previous days of doing nothing but drool absentmindedly infront of screenings and panels (and sometimes, infront of nothing at all), it was nice to talk to people who also like drawing really freaking weird stuff.

After doing my best impression of a person with normal social skills, it was off to the Bandai booth for a TT staff signing. Glen, David, Tara and the rest were there with free copies of Teen Titans GO! #1 on hand for signing purposes. The coordinators were giving out Teen Titans t-shirts (say that alot of times) for correctly answered trivia, and handed out promotional 1.5" Red X Robin figures to those waiting in line for the signing.

While waiting, saw Derrick again, and got introduced to a few other artists. It was pretty loud in the area with all the Exhibit Hall chaos and stuffs at the Bandai booth, so unfortunately didn't get to catch some names. Ah well, hope I meet em again sometime. Anyway, got Glen and the rest to sign my ultra cool, beloved TT promo cel from last year's SDCC. And because I'll always love the Powerpuff girls, got Tara to sign a Puff comic I took along. After more walking around and getting pummeled by the Exhibit Hall's hugeass Saturday crowd, attended the Adult Swim panel. Which kinda resembled a freaky fullhouse beehive whose queen turned horny and started doling out free honey, on account of all the people there. What on earth am I talking about? Anyway, neat AS clips and cool freebies were had by all. After catching Bill Plympton's awesome "Hair High", and the Spike & Mike Twisted fest (which had much better shorts than last year's abysmal turnout, I gotta add), I called it a day.

Oh yea, here's a complete(?) rundown of what new stuff was seen at the Bandai and Monogram Teen Titan displays:

- A second Robin bust, in more of an action pose. Part of their Titans team series

Unfortunately, didn't attend the last day of con. Had to catch an early flight back home, where large piles of work and other priorities were lying in wait. So ends this con report. I leave you all with the mental image of one hand clapping.
