Series details on Tiny Titans (and: TTG #49 cover revealed!; TTG & DVD updates)
Posted by Butch on August 27, 2007 @ 11:47 pm EST - Link

Today, Newsarama held a very in-depth interview with Tiny Titans' creators Art Baltazar and Franco Aureliani, in which the two discuss their comic-making process, intentions for the series, and more. The interview reveals that the "Tiny Titans" comic series will debut on January 2008, but readers of the regular Teen Titans series will see them first (as the Titans' favorite TV show) in "Teen Titans" #50, which comes out this Wednesday, August 29th. As Art states: "We have access to the whole Titans universe. So as long as the Titans fought 'em or they're on the cartoon, we can use 'em."

Also revealed in the interview are Slade as the Tiny Titans' school principal (called by his "Terminator" moniker because he's so strict), Trigon as their substitute teacher, and a whole bunch of other guest appearances...the Fearsome Five, Terra, Psimon, and even Batgirl to name just a few. Also, it seems the Tinys take up residence in a Titans Treehouse.

With Art and Franco digging up even the most obscure Titans characters (anyone remember "The Ant" and his wall-climbing suction cups?), and intentions for humor to hit multiple age levels, "Tiny Titans" is sounding pretty promising. And thankfully, poses no apparent danger to "Teen Titans Go!". Click here to read the entire interview.

At last! The latest edition of "Previews" comics catalog revealed the mysterious cover art for "Teen Titans Go!" #49, which TTG writer J. Torres has displayed on his blog. The cover for "Teen Titans Go!" #49 had been kept under wraps by DC Comics since it first solicited the issue earlier this month, which was described as follows:

Don't miss the issue that Teen Titans fans have been waiting for! A new foe is on a crime spree in Jump City, and it's up to the Teen Titans to put an end to it. But what happens when this villain actually turns out to be an evil blast from the past?

The unveiled cover reveals the "evil blast from the past" to be none other than Slade! Interestingly, it seems he'll be presented as a "new villain" at first. To see how it all plays out, watch for this issue when it hits stores on November 28th.

Also out in November is the first full-sized collected volume for "Teen Titans Go!", effectively replacing the old, smaller "digest book" format. Titled "Titans Together", this 6th volume collection will include TTG issues #27 to 32, printed on larger pages of higher quality. It's also available for pre-order on Amazon.com, so be sure to get your copy:

TTG Vol. 6 "Titans Together" comes out on November 14th; it's also a big chance for TTG fans to let DC Comics know we want more collected books and new issues of "Teen Titans Go!", as there still hasn't been any official word on whether or not the series will continue. More on that as it comes, so stay tuned.

Last but definitely not least, also in November is the release of the Teen Titans "The Complete Fourth Season" DVD. TvShowsOnDVD.com has added the back cover for the DVD release, which confirms the bonus feature to be a "Teen Titans: Know Your Foes" gallery for Season Four. You can pre-order your copy from Amazon.com at a nice discount:

"Tiny Titans" updates; TTG not in danger? (also: Impulse co-creator Mike Wieringo passes away)
Posted by Butch on August 15, 2007 @ 10:55 pm EST - Link

Amid the recent confusion over DC Comic's announcement of "Tiny Titans" (and what it means for our beloved "Teen Titans Go!"), "Teen Titans Go!" writer J. Torres recently sent us his thoughts:

Just got back from the Chicago con where much confusion over TTG's cancellation ensued following the announcement of "Tiny Titans." I'm still trying to get to the bottom of things, but it looks like after the above interview was posted on Friday afternoon, fans begin mobbing Jann Jones and Dan DiDido at the convention complaining about the pending end of TTG. Next thing you know, Jann is recanting what she said in the interview and Dan's telling fans that TTG will go on. And late last night, after the DC dinner, Jann did say to me that they weren't cancelling TTG anymore but didn't give me any details.

More about this can be found in J's post at ComicBloc's forums:

Anyway, there seems to be some confusion over the whole cancellation thing and I'm hoping to have a phone conversation with someone at DC to clarify this. Before the con, and the announcement of the new Johnny DC books, it was my understanding that we had until "at least #50" for TTG. Meaning, yes, the series was to be cancelled but we weren't exactly sure when. However, after the Newsarama piece and DC panel on Saturday it seems a number of fans approached Dan DiDio and Jann Jones with their objections about the cancellation... and before the weekend was over, I was hearing the book was not cancelled anymore!

But this could have been Jann and Dan relenting to the mob or making a snap decision or who knows what. I'm hoping it's true, but I need specifics (not cancelled until a certain issue number? until Tiny Titans debuts in 2008? until further notice?) and some kind of "official" word before I celebrate

In any case, I do want to thank ALL the fans out there who have been writing letters and e-mail, and those who "attacked" Dan and Jann this weekend, in a show of support for TTG. Paul Levitz himself congratulated me at the DC dinner for "inspiring such passionate and dedicated fans" and invited me to drop by his office anytime to check out all the letters and cards he's received from fans trying to save TTG. So, thanks guys, you rock harder than Terra. (Get it? Get it? Hee-hee.)

So what's all this mean for "Teen Titans Go!"? Time will tell, but things are definitely set in motion. The best thing fans can do now is continue writing letters, and maybe thanking DC Comics for its latest decision to not cancel "Teen Titans Go!". Both will help, and recent events have already shown how big fan power can really be. Titan fans, go!

For more on "Tiny Titans", Wizard Magazine interviewed the "Tiny Titans" crew on how the upcoming series got its start. Writer Franco Aureliani and artist Art Baltazar talk about their Titan influences and reveal what's in store for this new Johnny DC kids title. They're also apparently huge fans of Marv Wolfman and George Perez' "The New Teen Titans" series, and will be using many villains from those stories.

Even if there's no fighting in this comic, it'll be lots of fun to see tiny versions of the Fearsome Five and Blackfire, who are just a few among many DC characters making cameos.

Comics artist icon Mike Wieringo recently passed away, this Sunday August 12th. He is most remembered for his artwork run on DC's Flash series, Marvel's Fantastic Four, and for co-creating everyone's favorite Young Justice (and later Titan) speedster "Impulse"/Bart Allen. For some of us, Mike's work on Bart and DC's speedsters is among what we consider their definitive contemporary look, and it seems unreal that he can already be gone.

Newsarama put up a rememberance for Mike Wieringo with words from his comics collaborators, Mark Waid, Todd Dezago, and Karl Kesel. Our thoughts go out to Mike's loved ones and everyone he and his work have touched.

The chance of seeing more Teen Titans animated projects rests on the show's DVD sales, so buying what's arguably the best season of Teen Titans will help that out alot. Also, every purchase you make through TitansGo.net helps keep our site going, so thanks for any support!

Is DC Comics trading in fan-favorite "Teen Titans Go!" for a younger-skewing Titans series? Perhaps not. The ongoing question of "Teen Titans Go!"'s status was recently noted in Newsarama's interview with DC's Coordinating Editor Jann Jones, regarding a revamp of their "Johnny DC" kids comics line.

DC is planning to launch a trio of kid-friendly superhero comic series, and the Titans are getting their due in a notably "tiny" way. New comic series "Tiny Titans" will launch in early 2008 with art by Art Baltazar, along with two other kid titles ("Billy Batson and the Magic of Shazam", and "Super Friends"). Jann says it'll feature tiny versions of the Titans members in funny situations while keeping the characters in mind:

Jann Jones: "Art’s stories with Tiny Titans are so funny and cute, and they use all of the things that little versions of the Titans would do. In issue #2, the girls use Cyborg as an Easy Bake Oven. Beast Boy gets a puppy. Everyone learns not to play tag with Kid Flash. It’s little storylines like that that bring in the magic of childhood, that excitement and innocence to the stories."

Now for the alarming part: Jann stated "We’re going to be losing Teen Titans Go! and Justice League Unlimited in the line that I know of". However, Newsarama adds later that DC Comics contacted them to say it was an error and that "Teen Titans Go!" has not yet been cancelled (at least not officially). Oddly, DC didn't deny the JLU comic's demise, which while unfortunate, may be a good indication for TTG. Jann also stated that "Tiny Titans" is not intended to be a replacement for "Teen Titans Go!" in any way, so fans of TTG shouldn't declare war on it just yet. Writing letters to DC Comics urging them to keep "Teen Titans Go!" continues to be the best way to turn the tide of DC's indecision in TTG's favor, so keep on writing, everyone! DC really does listen.

For the entire interview, click here. As for a look at "Tiny Titans", click here and here to see a bunch of character designs. Both Wonder Girls, and the lasso is a jump rope? Clever. In a very ironic way, "Tiny Titans" would make a perfect nod to Titans writer/co-creator Marv Wolfman's "Teeny Titans" comic story.

TT Season 4 DVD release details! (also: story editor Amy Wolfram writes "Fab Five" Titans & more)
Posted by Butch on August 2, 2007 @ 11:48 pm EST - Link

TVShowsOnDVD comes through once again, with details and box art for the "Teen Titans: The Complete 4th Season" DVD! At last, the fan-favorite "The End" story arc with Raven battling her dark side and father Trigon will soon be released on DVD! And of course, don't forget Season 4 also had Slade being twice as awesome.

The 2-disc "The Complete 4th Season" DVD will include all 13 eps of Season 4, and will be released on November 20th, 2007 for the suggested retail price of $19.98. Distributor Warner Home Video states the DVD will have special features "that allow the viewer to access 'top secret files', and examine up close the opposition which the Teen Titans face in Season Four." This special feature will be separated into five parts.

During their "DCU: New Worlds Order" panel at San Diego Comic-Con, DC Comics showed off the incredible cover art for "Teen Titans: Year One", their upcoming mini-series. The mini-series is written by Amy Wolfram (ex-story editor for the animated Titans) and being drawn by Karl Kerschl. Originally slated for release this year, it will instead come out in early 2008.

"Teen Titans: Year One" will retell how the original "Fab Five" Teen Titans team (Robin, Speedy, Kid Flash, Wonder Girl, and Aqualad) came together. Even though Speedy is missing from the cover, he'll be featured significantly, along with several lesser-known Titans. With Amy Wolfram on scripts and Karl Kerschl's cover art revealing an amazingly unique (and refreshingly teenaged) look for the mini-series, there's no doubt "Teen Titans: Year One" will be a must-read for fans of the animated series and Titans in general.

For a deeper look, Teen Titans (and now Transformers) character designer Derrick Wyatt has put up many photos of the Transformers: Animated series' presence at San Diego Comic-Con to his blog. Photos were taken of Hasbro's Transformers panel, the Transformers: Animated clip screening, the Cartoon Network booth signing afterwards, the incredibly accurate show-based toys at Hasbro's booth, and even a Bumblebee "cosplayer"! The Transformer, not the Titan. Click here to check them out.
