Teen Titans at Comic-Con (Part 2...finally)
Posted by Butch on July 27, 2006 @ 10:38 pm EST - Link

Don't worry, we're not dead. Checking in from the middle of nowhere with a quick (albeit days late) Comic-Con update. On Saturday July 22nd, WB screened the Teen Titans "Trouble in Tokyo" direct-to-video movie in its entirety to a large room of fans, filled to capacity. Teen Titans producer Glen Murakami, story editor David Slack, and Greg Cipes (Beast Boy) introduced the full screening. What happened during the entirety of the movie, would be telling.

On the "Scoring for Superheroes" panel on Thursday, July 20th, the DCAU composers provided a limited-time bonus soundtrack mix for "Trouble in Tokyo", available for download only during the Comic-Con event. We've uploaded it for your listening pleasure here (1.81 MB, MP3 format):

Some bad news concerning the release of "Trouble in Tokyo": we've gotten word from crew sources that the DTV will air on Cartoon Network as late as December of this year. Also, the DVD's release has been moved from this October to a possible March 2007 release. Hopefully these will be reconsidered.

For those of you fortunate enough to have seen the whole movie, we've created a "Trouble in Tokyo" discussion section on the TitansGo.net forums (massive spoiler warning, naturally). Give us your thoughts on "Tokyo"! As for us, expect full Comic-Con reports, additional news, and more once we've returned.

Note: To anyone who has emailed us in the past 2 weeks, thanks so much for your patience. We will get back to everyone once we've returned to civilization in a few short days.

Teen Titans at Comic-Con (Part 1)
Posted by K on July 22, 2006 @ 1:48 pm EST - Link

Greetings from Comic Con! There's a been a lot of stuff going on for Teen Titans, here's a rundown of what's been happening.

On Thursday, the panel "Scoring for Superheroes" had Lolita Ritmanis, Michael McQuistion, and Kristopher Carter talking about their line of work. After some talk of their work on shows like Justice Leage and Batman Beyond, Glen Murakami was invited up to speak on the business of scoring for superhero shows from a producer's perspective.

A lot of talk on the panel was about Bruce Timm, and how he goes about scoring for his shows. On the other hand, Glen gave the composers full freedom. "If you want to make it weird," he said to them, "make it really weird." Some clips were shown of work they'd done on the show, such as Terra flying during the training sequence, the end of "Bunny Raven," to show the breadth of the music in the show.

After talk of the show, it was time to see clips from "Teen Titans: Trouble in Tokyo"! We first saw the opening sequence, which showed Robin's declaration of their trip to Tokyo, and then how they all packed for the trip. Beast Boy took everything he could find, threw it on his suitcase, and then changed into an elephant to fit it all in. Raven stepped into her bathroom, grabbed a toothbrush, and after a moment of silence, decided it was all she needed and left. Starfire had some manner of Tamaranian creature that vaccuumed all the things she was talking into it, and then changed into a handbag for her to carry. While packing, Robin disturbed Silkie's nap on his bag, but after packing extra suits, Robin took another and made a bed for Silkie to go back to sleep on. Cyborg took a number of spare arms and legs, and even came across a spare head that looked back! Once all were packed and ready, he tried to shove all the luggage into the cargo hold of the T-Ship, but unfortunately couldn't fit everything in there. The next shot finds the Titans taking off from their tower, with the luggage tied down on the ship itself. Next was a sight gag showing the T-Ship on its pattern to Tokyo (in a very Indiana Jones fashion). The last part of the opening showed Beast Boy drinking a Mondo Gulp, and then seeing a sign that said "Next Rest Area: 2500 Miles."

Unlike the show's score, the score for "Trouble in Tokyo" was done by a full live orchestra. In the next clip we were shown, the Titans meet the chief of police, and watch the Troopers take down a godzilla like-monster with special cables (to which Cyborg remarked, "we have got to get one of those!") After introducing himself, the chief bows, and the rest of the Titans follow -- except Beast Boy, whose head Cyborg held down.

Michael McQuistion talked a lot about how the score was done in an asian scale, and they really put a lot of elements of asian music into it. The clip we saw had the Titans theme done in that scale, and it sounded wonderful.

The composers put up a clip from the score for those in attendance, so we'll have that for you soon! They also mentioned that they would be scoring for "Legion of Superheroes." Hooray!

Friday was the panel for "Legion of Superheroes." Butch will have that update for you, since I skipped out on that panel.

Today we'll be seeing the movie in full at 7pm, and we'll have an update about it for you tomorrow. The clips we've seen have us really excited for the movie.

J. Torres and Todd Nauck were here doing signings and sketches at the DC booth earlier today. Todd will be back tomorrow to do some more, while J. has a signing and a panel.

We'll have full reports for you, along with other little goodies, this coming week, so stay tuned!

Full Behind-the-scenes process behind scene from "X"! (and: more Titans crew artwork)
Posted by Butch on July 10, 2006 @ 7:54 pm EST - Link

Teen Titans director Ben Jones has a double treat for Titans fans:

First off, he recently put his concept doodles for Doom Patrol's Robotman (drawn on a "Homecoming Part 2" first draft script) up on his blog, including Robotman as Mr. T. You heard right, Cliff Steele pity da foo.

Next, Ben posted a step-by-step process for bringing an episode scene from script to finish.

"Here's something weird about blogspot - if you start a post in, say, February, and don't publish it until July, it'll still post as a February post. Just sayin', is all."

So in a recent entry for "February", Ben goes into the process behind a scene from "X", an episode he directed. It's the scene where Super-D Starfires poke Robin to see if he's the real deal. Provided are his concept drawings, over a dozen storyboard pages, and raw footage taken straight from the pre-final build of the scene. He also describes what is done for each step, for those interested in what goes on during production. Highly recommended reading. Thanks for this special look into what's done for the show, Ben!

Teen Titans prop designer Norm Ryang steps out of the prop creating realm to take a shot at Cyborg. Norm has designed just about every prop related to the character, so why not try Cy himself? Check out his mixed media Cyborg art here, and give him your thoughts.

Posted by Butch on July 8, 2006 @ 3:41 pm EST - Link

Torres interview from Newsarama, it's revealed that Wonder Girl debuts in "Teen Titans Go!" #36! Included are preview pages for the issue (with many Season 5 Titans) by artist Todd Nauck. Also, Teen Titans producer Glen Murakami himself designed the issue's cover, featuring the Fab Five together at last!

If that's not enough, J. Torres discusses what went into getting Wonder Girl for TTG, how her story starts off, concerns for TTG following the show's cancellation, upcoming TTG artists, what's in TTG's future, other surprises, and lots more. Click here to read the full interview!

Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Raven, and Beast Boy are back to save the world in their very first film, which finds the Teen Titans battling a mysterious and menacing Japanese criminal known as Brushogun, who has sent a high-tech ninja to attack the young heroes. The battle has only begun for the crime-fighting five, who pack their bags and take off for Tokyo to destroy their newest menace. Producers Glen Murakami (Batman Beyond, Justice League) and David Slack (Stuart Little, Max Steel), along with cast member Greg Cipes (voice of Beast Boy), will be on hand to introduce the film. Room 6CDEF"

Amy Wolfram and Adam Beechen will also be at "Animation Story Meeting" @ 5:30-7pm on Saturday, to discuss writing for animation. Oddly, Saturday's "Tokyo" panel info says "Tokyo" is out in 2007 instead of this October 17th. Hopefully a mistake on the organizer's part. For Titan fans attending Comic-Con, these panels can't be missed!
