Titans crew art, CN & Legion news, and TT mini-marathons for July
Posted by Butch on June 27, 2006 @ 6:46 pm EST - Link

Teen Titans director Ben Jones put up some amusing Negative Man doodles on his blog. Go check em out and let Ben know what you think. And don't mind the Eeyore tail, nobody else does.

As previously reported, Ben Jones is now a director for the upcoming "Legion of Super Heroes" series. Our Legion crew sources tell us the series will be wrapping up its 1st Season production in late July (scripts, audio, designs & storyboards...only thing left is overseas animation)! Catch it on the CW network when it airs on Kid's WB this fall, as well as its preview at Comic-Con next month if you're attending.

Comics Continuum provides a Teen Titans airing schedule for the month of July. While episodes aren't spread throughout the weekdays, each day that does air episodes have multiple timeslots, effectively making each a mini-marathon on their own.

Newsarama has a brief follow-up from Cartoon Network regarding the claims that CN and WB are breaking off licensing terms:

"We will continue to develop original projects through Cartoon Network Studios and other producers,” said a network spokesperson. “In addition, we will seek acquired programming from our long-term partners Warner Bros. Animation and other producers and distributors."

In short, there will still be series produced for Cartoon Network by WB Animation. However, it doesn't touch on exactly why DC animation shows are being dropped from the network. Stay tuned.

Why CN is dropping Teen Titans, JLU, and other DC shows (and: new Legion looks & news!)
Posted by Butch on June 23, 2006 @ 3:33 pm EST - Link

A recent "Animated Shorts" column from Newsarama discusses the current Cartoon Network trend of dropping DC animated series, such as JLU and Teen Titans. According to their source at Warner Bros. Animation, this trend continues with the imminent cancellation of "Krypto the Super Dog" (CN's last DC animated series). The source offers a reason why:

"CN wants to focus on their own properties," says the source. "While I can understand this, I think that Krypto needs saving. I know it's not necessarily the most popular show on CN, but, it is a WB Animation/DC property, and so saving it could have very positive repercussions on the long-term DC/CN relationship. We weren't able to save JLU or Teen Titans because we didn't know that they were ending until too late. But if we act now to start a 'Save Krypto' letter writing campaign to the powers that be at CN, it might make a huge difference in the future of the show. Plus it shows CN there is a large fan base for the DC properties on their network, possibly paving the way for a return to CN of several other DC properties"

The licensing split between CN and WB a few months ago appears to be related after all. However, it seems unlikely that CN wouldn't be aware of the large DC animation fanbase (and its marked history), contrary to what the source claims. Columnist Steve Fritz later provides his own input. Read the full article here.

Some Legion news, first from The Beat: this year's New York Licensing Show featured a big presence from WB Animation, including an updated "Legion" look, which shows a new series logo, and "normal" Bouncing Boy design. The Licensing Show is an event where companies get to display their properties in the hopes of finding the right licenser for merchandise dealing and such. It looks like "Legion" may get decent licensing attention like Teen Titans did. Reportedly, from Mattel.

Comics Continuum also provides a brand new Legion promo image! This new image appears to cement the core team at Superboy (confirmed by our Legion crew sources to be called "Superman" now, following the infamous Siegel ownership ruling), Saturn Girl, Brainiac 5...with stretchy neck, Bouncing Boy, Phantom Girl, Timber Wolf, and Lightning Lad.

TT cancellation "reason" from ToyFare (also: episodic TTG stories?)
Posted by Butch on June 20, 2006 @ 6:37 pm EST - Link

ToyFare #108 came out last week, with a 2-page feature on the Teen Titans and JLU cancellations. In it, WB Animation president Sander Schwartz says they were cancelled because they "lasted longer and for more episodes than most successful animated shows, and it's time to give them a bit of a rest." He later adds: "In animation and the kids' business in general, you're not making money from TV, but from a variety of sources: home video, merchandising and licensing. That's just the traditional cycle. There isn't a compelling reason to do new shows." ("shows" refers to new episodes, not new series). Of course many fans will find those statements questionable, so take it as you will.

TT producer Glen Murakami states contentment with how the show and Season 5 ended, while leaving it open. Regarding a revival, he is optimistic: "That's still a possibility. But it's too soon to tell."

Schwartz adds, regarding more DTV movies: "I think you will be seeing more DC-based long-form video products within the next few years," and says the DTV format allows them to try "new and different" material.

Speaking of merchandise, ToyFare observes that Bandai has yet to announce their next Teen Titans toys (the Doom Patrol figures, soul-self Raven, zombified Slade, etc.). The lack of new toys does lessen ways fans can show support for Teen Titans, but luckily we have "Trouble in Tokyo" and the Season 2 DVDs to look forward to. Let's give them their "compelling reason" to continue Teen Titans!

DC Comics released their Sept. '06 lineup yesterday, including "Teen Titans Go!" #35. From its description, it seems to tie in with this month's TTG #32 (previewed here at JTO). This will be the series' first multi-part story, something fans've been wanting to see. Will this open up "episodic" story options for "Teen Titans Go!"? Only one way to find out. "Legion" at Comic-Con (and: New TTG Cover Artist & more!)
Posted by Butch on June 15, 2006 @ 5:51 pm EST - Link

The Teen Titans "Trouble in Tokyo" movie screening next month is not alone. Comics Continuum reports that the upcoming "Legion of Super Heroes" cartoon will also be previewed at next month's Comic-Con in San Diego!

Director Ben Jones says there'll be "a mix of old Legion villains and new characters" in store for the new show, which is very cool news. Wil Wheaton (voice of Aqualad for Titans) also confirmed his part as Cosmic Boy for Legion, who is one of the futuristic super-team's founding members. Unfortunately, the magnetism-powered Cosmic Boy is a secondary character and won't have an ongoing role in the series.

"Teen Titans Go!" main artist Todd Nauck announced on his website that he'll be the new cover artist for "Teen Titans Go!"! He'll replace current cover artist Sean Galloway starting with issue #37, out late this year.

In related news, JTorresOnline has a preview for TTG #32 (featuring Pantha, Kole, and Gnarrk as guests). The issue'll be in stores June 28th. Check out the five-page preview here.

"Tokyo" DTV premiering at San Diego Comic-con! (also: DVDs in widescreen? & game news)
Posted by Butch on June 8, 2006 @ 7:37 pm EST - Link

An incredible announcement! The Teen Titans "Trouble in Tokyo" movie will have a premiere screening at the San Diego Comic-Con next month! In a recent chat interview between Warner Bros. and Home Theater Forum, Warner Bros. revealed the exciting news:

"WARNER: We're having the world premiere of the new TEEN TITANS Original Animated Movie TEEN TITANS: TROUBLE IN TOKYO at Comic Con next month. It will be on Sat. night 7/22 at 7pm."

Regarding Teen Titans DVD releases, Warner Bros. also stated that they are considering widescreen for them (as well as for The Batman). Widescreen treatment for the show would be very ideal, as it is originally animated in the widescreen format. That option, ontop of the Teen Titans "Tokyo" movie showing next month at Comic-con? Titans fans, rejoice!

TVShowsOnDVD.com has transcripts of the entire chat interview:

Thanks go to "Recliner Man" for posting this news at the TitansGo.net forums yesterday!

Teen Titans videogame sequel! Majesco still has plans for handheld Titans, despite selling publishing rights for Teen Titans console games to THQ.

GameSpot reports that Majesco will have "Teen Titans 2" for Gameboy Advance out this fall, retailing at $29.99 (developed by A2M, look here for screenshots!). In this sequel, the team takes on the Brotherhood of Evil! Will we see other Season 5 characters? Stay tuned.

TTG behind-the-scenes (and: Mas y Menos to appear in DCU TT comic)
Posted by Butch on June 6, 2006 @ 5:16 pm EST - Link

JTorresOnline, the official site of "Teen Titans Go!" writer J. Torres, has provided another great behind-the-scenes exclusive for the comic series. Click here to check out four original pencilled comic pages from "Teen Titans Go!" #19 (the Johnny Rancid & zombies issue), as drawn by main "Teen Titans Go!" series artist Todd Nauck!

Once again, the Teen Titans animated series influences its comic book counterpart with which it shares roots. At Wizard World Philadelphia last week, Geoff Johns (writer of DC's current Teen Titans comic series) stated during the "DC Nation" panel session that Mas and Menos from the animated series will be showing up in future issues of Teen Titans!

The TT cartoon series that almost was (original 80's HB pitch art added to Official Artwork!)
Posted by Butch on June 1, 2006 @ 7:43 pm EST - Link

We've quite an update for the Official Artwork gallery today! In the 1980s, Hanna-Barbera studios was planning to produce an animated series based on "The New Teen Titans" comic series by Marv Wolfman and George Perez. The series would've featured Wonder Girl (as leader instead of Robin), Kid Flash, Cyborg, Starfire, Raven, & Beast Boy. It would've been handled as a "Superfriends" spin-off, but sadly, this series never saw the light of day.

However, in celebration of Joseph Barbera's 95th birthday this year (March 24th), several of Hanna-Barbera's original pitch artwork for the series were put up in a gallery. We've acquired photos from this gallery, and have added 7 images to their own section in the Official Artwork gallery. Of interesting note are Raven's mode of transport, and HB's takes on the Titans' civilian identities. Check em out for a look at the Hanna-Barbera Teen Titans cartoon that almost was!:

- Team roster (lower half detail)
- Leaping into battle!
- Donna Troy (Wonder Girl) & Wally West (Kid Flash) designs
- Kory Anders (Starfire) & Garfield Logan (Changeling/BB) designs
- Vic Stone (Cyborg) design

In other news, Legions of Gotham reports that a "Legion of Super Heroes" comic based on the upcoming cartoon may be coming from DC's Kids line!

Also, a recent Newsarama Dave Johnson interview (100 Bullets, Ben 10) reveals that the artist is working on the Legion show as well. His comics & cartoon work is discussed, as well as upcoming projects with Bruce Timm!
