"Tiny Titans" updates; TTG not in danger? (also: Impulse co-creator Mike Wieringo passes away)

Amid the recent confusion over DC Comic's announcement of "Tiny Titans" (and what it means for our beloved "Teen Titans Go!"), "Teen Titans Go!" writer J. Torres recently sent us his thoughts:

Just got back from the Chicago con where much confusion over TTG's cancellation ensued following the announcement of "Tiny Titans." I'm still trying to get to the bottom of things, but it looks like after the above interview was posted on Friday afternoon, fans begin mobbing Jann Jones and Dan DiDido at the convention complaining about the pending end of TTG. Next thing you know, Jann is recanting what she said in the interview and Dan's telling fans that TTG will go on. And late last night, after the DC dinner, Jann did say to me that they weren't cancelling TTG anymore but didn't give me any details.

More about this can be found in J's post at ComicBloc's forums:

Anyway, there seems to be some confusion over the whole cancellation thing and I'm hoping to have a phone conversation with someone at DC to clarify this. Before the con, and the announcement of the new Johnny DC books, it was my understanding that we had until "at least #50" for TTG. Meaning, yes, the series was to be cancelled but we weren't exactly sure when. However, after the Newsarama piece and DC panel on Saturday it seems a number of fans approached Dan DiDio and Jann Jones with their objections about the cancellation... and before the weekend was over, I was hearing the book was not cancelled anymore!

But this could have been Jann and Dan relenting to the mob or making a snap decision or who knows what. I'm hoping it's true, but I need specifics (not cancelled until a certain issue number? until Tiny Titans debuts in 2008? until further notice?) and some kind of "official" word before I celebrate

In any case, I do want to thank ALL the fans out there who have been writing letters and e-mail, and those who "attacked" Dan and Jann this weekend, in a show of support for TTG. Paul Levitz himself congratulated me at the DC dinner for "inspiring such passionate and dedicated fans" and invited me to drop by his office anytime to check out all the letters and cards he's received from fans trying to save TTG. So, thanks guys, you rock harder than Terra. (Get it? Get it? Hee-hee.)

So what's all this mean for "Teen Titans Go!"? Time will tell, but things are definitely set in motion. The best thing fans can do now is continue writing letters, and maybe thanking DC Comics for its latest decision to not cancel "Teen Titans Go!". Both will help, and recent events have already shown how big fan power can really be. Titan fans, go!

For more on "Tiny Titans", Wizard Magazine interviewed the "Tiny Titans" crew on how the upcoming series got its start. Writer Franco Aureliani and artist Art Baltazar talk about their Titan influences and reveal what's in store for this new Johnny DC kids title. They're also apparently huge fans of Marv Wolfman and George Perez' "The New Teen Titans" series, and will be using many villains from those stories.

Even if there's no fighting in this comic, it'll be lots of fun to see tiny versions of the Fearsome Five and Blackfire, who are just a few among many DC characters making cameos.

Comics artist icon Mike Wieringo recently passed away, this Sunday August 12th. He is most remembered for his artwork run on DC's Flash series, Marvel's Fantastic Four, and for co-creating everyone's favorite Young Justice (and later Titan) speedster "Impulse"/Bart Allen. For some of us, Mike's work on Bart and DC's speedsters is among what we consider their definitive contemporary look, and it seems unreal that he can already be gone.

Newsarama put up a rememberance for Mike Wieringo with words from his comics collaborators, Mark Waid, Todd Dezago, and Karl Kesel. Our thoughts go out to Mike's loved ones and everyone he and his work have touched.
