To celebrate TTG's third year of success, TitansGo.net also held a live chat with the comic's writer, J. Torres. Maybe questions were asked and some glimpses of the future shared. [7:38pm] <!Butch> alright J, here's your first: How'd you get your start in the comic writing business?
[7:38pm] <@JTorres> Actually, while I was still in college I was writing up pitches and proposals and sending them different comic companies...
[7:38pm] <@JTorres> ...to no avail.
[7:39pm] <@JTorres> Most didn't even respond, while others would say "not accepting submissions at this time" or "try us at a later time" - which generally meant, "when you've got more experience."
[7:40pm] <@JTorres> Then one day a friend of mine suggested I collaborate with a mutual friend who was an artist.
[7:40pm] <@JTorres> We started talking and I told him an idea for a comic I had.
[7:40pm] <@JTorres> It was a semi-autobiographical thing called "The Copybook Tales."
[7:41pm] <@JTorres> It was about this wannabe comic book writer who grew up in the 80s and was making his way in the real post-college world in the 90s.
[7:41pm] <@JTorres> We made a minicomic out of that. Basically, that means a handmade, photocopied and stapled number, like a zine.
[7:41pm] <@JTorres> We did about six of those, sent them around to different publishers, sold them online and at cons...
[7:42pm] <@JTorres> Eventually, a publisher in San Jose, CA - SLG Publishing - gave us a call and offered to publish "Copybook" as a "real" comic.
[7:43pm] <@JTorres> From there, the artist and I did six issue of that series, moved on to a miniseries for Image called "Siren", then I did some work for Marvel... and here we are ten years later.

[7:49pm] <@JTorres> Okay, if you are a writer wanting to get into comics the best piece of advice I can give you is...
[7:49pm] <@JTorres> ...hook up with an artist.
[7:50pm] <@JTorres> I mean that creatively! Not sexually :)
[7:50pm] <@JTorres> The reason being is that very few to no editors/publishers read script or pitches, especially if you're new and inexperienced.
[7:50pm] <@JTorres> But they will read minicomics, webcomics, homemade comics if you will. And that can showcase what you can do.
[7:51pm] <@JTorres> The only other way to break in then is either by knowing someone on the inside or making a name for yourself as a writer in another industry.

[7:52pm] <!Forau> As a side-question: does it matter which "other industry" or is there a preference?
[7:52pm] <@JTorres> A lot of new writers are discouraged by this but it really is true.
[7:52pm] <@JTorres> Not really. For example, Adam Beechen is from animation and is now writing the JLU comic and Robin.
[7:53pm] <@JTorres> Brad Metzer is a novelist.
[7:53pm] <@JTorres> Alan Heinberg works in film.
[7:53pm] <@JTorres> I think it's just a question of being good and... knowing someone.
